Frigidaire sells over-the-range and countertop microwaves, plus built-in microwave options in some lines. Over-the-range units are the most involved to service because they also serve as the range hood: besides the magnetron, high-voltage diode, capacitor and door switches, they have a vent fan, a cooktop light and a heat sensor.

A microwave that runs without heating, keeps blowing a fuse or will not start with the door closed usually has one failed part in the high-voltage circuit or the door-switch set. We diagnose it on site, discharge the high-voltage section safely, and take care with the cabinet and venting around over-the-range units.

No. A microwave contains a high-voltage capacitor that can hold a dangerous charge even after it is unplugged. Owner-level checks stop at the outlet, the breaker, whether the door closes fully and whether the turntable is seated correctly.

Stop the microwave, unplug it or switch off its breaker, and do not run it again until it has been inspected. Metal trim on a dish or foil can cause sparks, but so can a damaged waveguide cover or another internal fault.

On many over-the-range models, yes: the fan starts automatically when the microwave senses heat rising from the cooktop below, to protect its own controls. If the fan keeps running when the cooktop is off and cool, the sensor or control should be checked.
