Most refrigerator maintenance advice is either too vague ("keep it clean") or too ambitious for a busy household. The schedule below sticks to tasks an owner can do safely, grouped by how often they actually matter. Always check your owner's manual for model-specific steps.
Every Week or Two
- Wipe spills from shelves, drawer tracks and door bins before they dry. Sticky residue on a drawer track is a common reason drawers stop closing flush.
- Glance at the thermometer. Aim for 40°F or below in the fresh-food section and 0°F in the freezer.
Every Month
- Wipe the door gaskets with warm water and a mild soap, then dry them. Food residue on a gasket prevents a full seal and invites frost.
- Make sure nothing on the shelves is blocking the air vents between compartments.
Every Six Months
- Unplug the refrigerator, then vacuum the condenser coils with a brush attachment. Depending on the model, they are reached from the lower front grille or on the back of the cabinet. Plug it back in when finished.
- Replace the water filter if your model has one. Frigidaire's general guidance is roughly every six months, or sooner if the filter indicator comes on or water flow drops.
- Replace the air filter on models that have one, following the manual's interval.
Once a Year
- Check that the refrigerator is still level and the doors swing closed on their own from a partly open position.
- Look along the visible water line for kinks or dampness.
- Clean the drain pan only if your manual shows it as owner-accessible.
Things Not to Do
Do not use sharp tools to remove frost, do not cover the grille or back ventilation space, and do not run the refrigerator with the toe grille removed. If maintenance does not resolve warm temperatures or frost, it is time for a refrigerator repair diagnosis.
