Replacing a Frigidaire Refrigerator Water Filter Without the Usual Problems

A new filter should be the easiest job in the kitchen, yet it is a common cause of slow dispensers, drips and sputtering water. Small details make the difference.

Frigidaire has used several filter families over the years, including different PureSource styles, and they are not interchangeable. Filter swaps that go wrong usually come down to the wrong filter, a filter that is not fully seated, or air left in the line.

Get the Right Filter

Check the old filter's label and your owner's manual before buying. Filters for different housings can look similar but will not lock in correctly. Be cautious with very cheap look-alike filters; fit and filtration performance vary widely, and a poorly fitting filter can leak.

Swap It Carefully

  1. Have a towel ready. A small amount of water in the housing is normal.
  2. Follow the release method your manual describes. Depending on the model that is a push-button, a push-to-release, or a quarter-turn twist.
  3. Insert the new filter fully until it locks. A filter that is almost seated can allow water to bypass or drip.
  4. Reset the filter indicator as the manual explains.

Flush the Air Out

Dispense water into a large container for several minutes, stopping and restarting a few times. Sputtering, cloudy water and a small burst of carbon fines are normal for a brand-new filter and should clear. Discard the first batch or two of ice as well.

If Things Get Worse After a Change

  • No water at all: reseat the filter. If that fails, reinstall the old one briefly to see whether the new filter is the problem.
  • Drip from the housing: remove, inspect the O-rings on the filter for damage, and reinsert.
  • Still leaking with a genuine filter: the housing itself may be cracked, which is a repair job.

Persistent leaks or no flow with a correct, properly seated filter point to the housing, the inlet valve or the supply line. Our refrigerator repair team can track down which one.
