What H / HI Means
H or HI on a Frigidaire refrigerator is a high-temperature alarm. On French-door models Frigidaire states it triggers when the freezer reaches about 26°F or the refrigerator about 55°F; on other models it flashes when a compartment has been too warm for over an hour. It is a warning about temperature, not a part name — the cause can be as simple as an open door or as serious as a cooling failure.
Common Causes of H / HI
- Door left open or not sealing
- Large load of warm groceries
- Recovery after a power outage
- Dusty condenser coil or failed condenser fan
- Evaporator fan, defrost, or sealed-system fault
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Two separate things to do. For the refrigerator: close every door fully, check that gaskets are not folded, clear anything blocking interior vents, and press the alarm reset or Clear Alerts key if your model has one — the alarm stays active until temperature recovers. For the food: place a thermometer in each compartment and follow USDA limits (40°F for fresh food, 0°F for frozen). If the temperature has not started dropping within a few hours with doors closed, book service.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Anything beyond doors, gaskets and vents involves the cooling system or powered components behind panels.
- If the alarm keeps returning with the doors closed, the cause is inside the cooling system and needs proper diagnosis.
- Damage caused during a repair attempt may not be covered by your warranty — check your warranty terms first.
