A dryer that tumbles clothes but never gets warm is frustrating, but the tumbling itself tells you something useful: the motor and belt are working. The remaining questions are whether heat is being produced and whether safety devices have cut it off.
Owner-Level Checks
- Cycle selection: confirm you have not selected an air-only, fluff or no-heat setting.
- Electric dryers and the breaker: electric dryers typically use a double-pole breaker. If one side trips, the drum can still turn while the heating element gets no power. Reset the dryer breaker at the panel fully off, then on.
- Gas dryers: make sure the gas supply valve to the dryer is open. If you ever smell gas, do not operate switches or the dryer; leave the home and call your gas utility from outside.
- Lint screen and vent: clean the lint screen, and check that the exterior vent flap opens when the dryer runs. Restricted airflow is a common reason safety devices shut off the heat.
Why Airflow Matters Here
Dryers are designed with thermal safety devices that cut heat if the dryer overheats. A clogged vent is one of the classic triggers. Replacing a safety part without fixing the airflow problem just means it trips again, and it leaves the underlying fire risk in place.
What a Technician Checks
On electric models, likely suspects are the heating element, thermal fuse, high-limit thermostat or cycling thermostat. On gas models, they include the igniter, flame sensor and gas valve coils. Testing these parts means opening the cabinet near live wiring or gas components, which is not an owner job.
