On a Frigidaire gas range, the clicking you hear is the spark igniter trying to light gas at the burner. When the burner does not catch, or clicks continuously, the cause is often simple, but gas appliances call for a careful approach.
Gas Safety First
If you smell gas, do not try to light burners, use electrical switches or use your phone indoors. Leave the home and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. Only continue with the checks below if there is no gas odor.
Before Checking Anything
- Turn all burner knobs to Off.
- Let the grates, caps and burner heads cool completely.
Owner-Level Checks
- Burner cap alignment: a cap that is slightly off-center is one of the most common reasons a burner will not light evenly. Lift it and reseat it flat and centered on the burner head as your manual shows.
- Moisture: after a boil-over or cleaning, water around the igniter can cause constant clicking. Let the parts air-dry thoroughly before using them.
- Clogged ports: food residue in the burner head slots can block flame. Clean only the removable caps and heads following the manual, and let them dry fully.
- Other burners: if no burner lights and there is no click, check whether the range is plugged in and the breaker is on, since electric ignition needs power.
What Owners Should Leave Alone
Do not adjust gas valves, supply connections, orifices or regulators, and do not remove the cooktop to reach wiring. Do not light burners with a match if the igniter is failing unless your manual specifically describes a manual lighting procedure for power outages.
When to Call
