Ice makers are the most service-heavy feature on many refrigerators, and Frigidaire models are no exception. Before assuming a part has failed, it is worth ruling out the handful of simple reasons an ice maker stops producing. Most of them take a few minutes and no tools.
Start With the Obvious
- Is it switched on? Depending on the model, the ice maker is turned on from the control panel or from a switch or wire arm on the ice maker itself. Cleaning the bin is a common way to accidentally switch it off.
- Is it a new installation? Frigidaire notes that a new ice maker can take up to 24 hours to produce its first batch, and the first few batches may be small or irregular. The first loads are usually worth discarding.
- Is the freezer cold enough? Ice production slows sharply if the freezer is warmer than about 0°F. Check with a thermometer.
Check the Water Supply
- Dispense water from the door. If flow is weak or nonexistent, the problem is upstream of the ice maker.
- Confirm the household supply valve behind or below the refrigerator is fully open, and that the supply line is not kinked where the refrigerator was pushed back.
- If the water filter is overdue, replace it following the steps in your owner's manual. An old or incorrectly seated filter restricts flow to both the dispenser and the ice maker.
When It Is Probably a Part
If water dispenses normally, the ice maker is on, and the freezer is at temperature, but no ice appears after a day, the likely causes move inside the appliance: a water fill tube that has frozen, a failing water inlet valve, or an ice maker module that no longer cycles. Frozen fill tubes often come back after a defrost unless the root cause, usually a valve or airflow issue, is fixed. These repairs involve water connections and wiring behind panels, so they are not owner jobs.
