When the power comes back, it is tempting to open the door, see that things feel cold, and move on. It is worth slowing down, because an outage raises two different questions. One is about the appliance. The other is about the food. Mixing them up is how people end up keeping food that should have been thrown away, or calling for repair when the refrigerator just needs time.
During the Outage
Keep the doors closed as much as possible. USDA guidance is that a closed refrigerator keeps food safe for about four hours, a full closed freezer holds temperature for about 48 hours, and a half-full freezer for about 24 hours. Opening doors to check shortens those windows.
The Food: Go by Temperature and Time
- Use an appliance thermometer. Perishable refrigerated food that has been above 40°F for more than two hours should be discarded.
- Frozen food that still contains ice crystals or reads 40°F or below can generally be refrozen, according to USDA guidance. When you are unsure how long food sat warm, throw it out.
- Do not rely on smell, look or taste. Bacteria that cause foodborne illness do not necessarily change any of those.
The Appliance: Give It Time, Then Verify
A refrigerator that has warmed up can take several hours, sometimes most of a day, to pull back down to normal temperature, especially if it is full of warm items. Many Frigidaire models will show a temperature alarm or a power-failure indicator while this happens. That is expected. Clear the alarm as your owner's manual describes and watch the thermometer.
Signs It Is Not Just Recovery
- The display is blank or erratic after power is restored and the breaker is on.
- No running sound from the compressor or fans after several minutes.
- Temperatures are no lower after 24 hours.
- A burning smell, clicking that repeats every few minutes, or a tripped breaker. Unplug the appliance if it is safe to reach the plug and leave the wiring alone.
Power surges when service returns can damage control boards and start relays. If you see any of the signs above, book a refrigerator repair or freezer repair visit rather than waiting and hoping.
