A refrigerator section that runs warm while the freezer still feels cold is one of the most common calls on Frigidaire top-freezer, side-by-side and French-door models. The good news is that it usually points away from the compressor and refrigerant. On most of these designs, cold air is made in the freezer and pushed into the fresh-food side, so a warm fridge with a cold freezer is typically a delivery problem.
Protect the Food First
Put an appliance thermometer in a glass of water on a middle shelf and read it after a few hours. The FDA recommends keeping the refrigerator at or below 40°F. If perishable food such as milk, meat, leftovers or cut produce has been above 40°F for more than two hours, food-safety guidance is to discard it rather than judge it by smell or appearance. Move what you can to a cooler or the freezer while you sort out the appliance.
Owner-Level Checks
- Settings: confirm the fresh-food temperature has not been changed, and that the unit is not in a showroom or demo mode described in your owner's manual.
- Blocked vents: the air openings between compartments are easy to cover with a tall container or an overfilled shelf. Clear a few inches around them.
- Doors and gaskets: a door held slightly open by a drawer or bottle lets warm, humid air in constantly. Close each door and look for gaps along the seal.
- Condenser coils: unplug the refrigerator first, then vacuum the coils behind the lower front grille or at the back, as your manual describes. Heavily dusty coils make the whole system work harder.
What Tends to Be Behind It
When the simple checks do not help, the usual suspects are an evaporator fan that has stopped or slowed, frost blocking the evaporator because a defrost part has failed, or a stuck air damper that controls how much cold air reaches the fresh-food side. Frost on the back wall of the freezer, or a fan that is silent when the freezer door switch is pressed, are useful details to mention. All three repairs involve removing interior panels and working near wiring, so they belong with a technician.
