Water Left in a Frigidaire Front-Load Washer Drum

A front-loader full of water after the cycle is locked for good reason. Here is how to handle it safely and what usually stops drainage.

When a front-load washer ends with water still visible behind the glass, the door usually stays locked. That is a safety feature, not a malfunction in itself: opening the door would dump the water on the floor. The goal is to get the water out safely, then find the reason it did not drain.

Safety Before Anything Else

  • Do not force the door open.
  • Water from a hot wash can still be hot. Give it time to cool.
  • Unplug the washer before touching any access panel or hose, and put down towels and a shallow pan.

Try the Easy Things First

  • Plug the washer back in and select a drain and spin or rinse and spin cycle. Sometimes an interrupted cycle simply needs to finish.
  • Check the drain hose behind the washer for kinks, and make sure it is not jammed too far into the standpipe.
  • If your household drain is backing up elsewhere, the problem may be the house plumbing rather than the washer.

The Pump Filter, If Your Model Has One

Some front-load washers have a small access door at the lower front with a pump filter and a drain tube. Many Frigidaire models do, but not all. Only open it if your owner's manual shows it as an owner-accessible part, and follow its steps exactly. Expect more water than the pan can hold, so drain slowly in stages. Coins, hair ties, small socks and buttons are common finds.

When a Technician Is Needed

If there is no owner-accessible filter, the filter is clear and the washer still will not drain, or you hear the pump humming without water moving, the drain pump or an internal hose blockage is likely. A door that will not unlock even once the drum is empty can indicate a door lock or control problem. These repairs involve the cabinet interior and wiring. Book a Frigidaire washer repair visit.
