What i40 Means
In Frigidaire's dishwasher error guide, i40 means a clogged filter or sump. The dishwasher cannot move water through the system properly because debris is restricting the filter area.
Common Causes of i40
- Food debris or labels blocking the filter
- Broken glass or hard object in the sump
- Filter not seated correctly
- Drain restriction further down the line
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Cancel the cycle and turn off the breaker. Remove the lower rack, then twist out the filter assembly (glass trap and fine filter on most models) and wash it in the sink with warm water and a soft brush. Check the sump opening for glass, bones, seeds or labels. Reinstall the filter until it locks, restore power, and run a cycle. If i40 persists, book service.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Anything past the removable filter — the chopper, pump housing or drain pump — requires disassembly under the tub.
- Broken glass in the sump can cut hands; if you see glass beyond the filter, leave it for a technician.
- Damage caused during a repair attempt may not be covered by your warranty — check your warranty terms first.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
