An air conditioner that runs but does not cool can make a room feel worse than having no air conditioner. Before calling, rule out the causes an owner can check safely.
Safety First
If the power cord or plug is damaged, discolored or warm, unplug the unit and do not use it. Never remove the cabinet; the capacitor and compressor wiring inside can be dangerous.
Owner-Level Checks
- Mode and setting: confirm the unit is in Cool mode, not Fan or Energy Saver in a way that pauses cooling, and that the set temperature is below the room temperature.
- Filter: switch off and unplug, then remove and wash the filter the way the owner’s manual shows. A clogged filter can cut cooling and cause icing.
- Outdoor side: make sure nothing blocks the rear of the unit outside, such as plants, awnings or a closed storm window.
- Sizing: a small unit may not keep up with a large, sunny room on a very hot day.
Signs of a Deeper Fault
- The fan runs, but you never hear the compressor start.
- The compressor starts and shuts off after a few seconds.
- Ice forms on the coil even with a clean filter.
