How to Defrost a Frigidaire Chest Freezer Safely

Most chest freezers are manual defrost. Letting frost get thick wastes energy and space, but rushing the job with sharp tools or heat can ruin the liner.

Frigidaire chest freezers are simple and dependable, but most of them are manual-defrost appliances. Frost slowly builds on the walls every time the lid is opened, and eventually it needs to come off. Your owner's manual will give model-specific guidance; a common rule of thumb is to defrost when frost reaches about a quarter of an inch.

Plan Around the Food

Pick a cool day and a time when the freezer is fairly empty. Move food into coolers with ice packs, or into another freezer, and keep it at 0°F or as close to it as possible. Work quickly; the goal is to finish before food in coolers starts to thaw.

Step by Step

  1. Unplug the freezer first. Do not defrost a running freezer.
  2. Lay towels around the base. If your model has a defrost drain, follow the manual to position a shallow pan or connect a hose to it.
  3. Leave the lid open and let the frost soften on its own. Placing a pan of hot (not boiling) water inside with the lid closed can speed things up; check it and replace it as it cools.
  4. Remove loosened sheets of frost by hand or with a plastic scraper designed for freezers.
  5. Wipe the interior with a mild solution of warm water and baking soda, then dry it thoroughly.
  6. Replace the drain plug if your model has one, plug the freezer back in, and let it run until it reaches temperature before reloading.

What Not to Do

  • No knives, screwdrivers or ice picks. Refrigerant tubing runs inside the walls of many chest freezers, and puncturing it ends the freezer's life.
  • No heat guns or open flame. A hair dryer, if used at all, should be on a cool setting and kept away from water and plastic.

If Frost Returns Fast

Heavy frost within a few weeks usually means warm air is getting in. Check that the lid closes evenly and the gasket is not torn or flattened. If the seal looks fine and frost still builds rapidly, or the freezer struggles to hold 0°F, book a Frigidaire freezer repair visit.
