Running a Frigidaire Freezer in the Garage: What to Know

Garage freezers face heat, cold and dust that kitchen appliances never see. Whether it works well depends on the model and your climate.

A second freezer in the garage is a popular way to store bulk food, and Frigidaire sells models described as garage-ready. Even so, a garage is a harder environment than a kitchen, and a freezer that works fine indoors can struggle out there.

Check the Temperature Range First

Every freezer is designed to run within a specific ambient temperature range, listed in the owner's manual or specification sheet. Models marketed as garage-ready are built to tolerate a wider range than standard models. Using a non-garage-rated model in a garage that gets very hot or very cold can lead to poor performance, and it is worth reading your warranty terms on installation location.

Heat Is the Bigger Problem in Warm Climates

In summer, garage temperatures can climb well above normal indoor conditions. The freezer then runs almost continuously, the condenser works harder, and components wear faster. Help it out by:

  • Leaving the ventilation clearance the installation guide specifies.
  • Keeping it out of direct sun and away from water heaters or other heat sources.
  • Unplugging it before vacuuming dust and cobwebs from coils or grilles every few months; garages are dusty.

Cold Can Cause Trouble Too

On some designs, very cold surroundings can cause a freezer to run less than it should, allowing the inside to warm. This is exactly what garage-rated models are meant to handle, so the model matters here.

Plug It In Properly

Plug the freezer directly into a properly grounded outlet rather than a long extension cord. Many garage outlets are GFCI-protected, and a tripped outlet can go unnoticed for days. A freezer alarm or remote thermometer is inexpensive insurance.

If a garage freezer is running constantly, frosting up quickly or failing to hold 0°F, a Frigidaire freezer repair visit can tell you whether it is the environment or a failing part.
