Frigidaire Upright Freezer Not Freezing Hard Enough

Soft ice cream and partly thawed packages in an upright freezer are a warning sign. A few checks narrow the cause before food is lost.

Upright freezers are convenient to organize, but because the door opens like a refrigerator, cold air spills out every time it is opened. When an upright Frigidaire freezer stops freezing firmly, the cause ranges from a simple door problem to a failed defrost part on frost-free models.

First, Protect the Food

Check a thermometer placed between packages. Food held at 0°F stays safe indefinitely from a food-safety standpoint. If items have thawed, USDA guidance is that food that still contains ice crystals or is at 40°F or below can be refrozen, though quality may suffer. When you cannot tell how long food was above 40°F, discard it.

Owner-Level Checks

  • Door seal: close the door on a strip of paper at several points around the gasket. If it slides out with no resistance, the seal is not doing its job there.
  • Overloading: packed shelves block airflow on frost-free models. Leave space near the vents.
  • Temperature control: confirm the setting has not been bumped.
  • Location: check the room temperature against the range your manual lists.
  • Coils and airflow: unplug the freezer before vacuuming any accessible condenser coils or grille, and keep the ventilation space clear.

Frost-Free vs. Manual Defrost

On a manual-defrost upright, thick frost on the shelves or walls insulates the food from the cooling surfaces and should be removed following the manual. On a frost-free upright, visible frost building on the back panel is not normal and suggests the automatic defrost system is not working, which can starve the freezer of airflow.

When to Call

Call for service if the freezer runs constantly without reaching 0°F, if frost builds on the back panel of a frost-free model, or if you hear clicking with no cooling. A freezer repair technician can test the defrost system, fans and start components.
