Frigidaire Top-Load Washer Will Not Spin: What to Check

A top-loader that fills and agitates but leaves clothes soaking wet often has a lid, load or drain problem. Some causes are simple; others need a technician.

A top-load washer that finishes with clothes dripping has not necessarily failed. Modern top-loaders will not spin unless several conditions are met, including a locked lid, a balanced load and a drained tub. Working through them in order separates the simple causes from real faults.

Start Safely

Do not reach into the tub while the washer is running or the basket is moving. If you need to remove clothes or water, cancel the cycle, wait for the basket to stop completely and the lid lock to release, then unplug the washer.

Owner-Level Checks

  • Lid: make sure the lid is fully closed. Many Frigidaire top-loaders lock the lid before spinning. Something caught under the lid, or a lid that does not close fully, can prevent the lock from engaging.
  • Load balance: a single heavy item, such as a bath mat or comforter, can cause the washer to pause spinning to protect itself. Redistribute the load and run a drain and spin cycle.
  • Overloading: an overpacked tub may not spin correctly. Remove some items.
  • Drain hose: look for a kink behind the washer or a hose pushed too far into the standpipe.
  • Too many suds: non-HE detergent in an HE washer can create enough foam to slow draining and spinning.

Plug the washer back in and try a drain and spin cycle with a small, balanced load.

Signs of a Mechanical or Electrical Fault

  • The lid does not lock, or the lid lock clicks repeatedly.
  • A humming sound without the basket moving.
  • Water remains in the tub even with a clear drain hose.
  • A burning smell. Unplug the washer and do not use it until it is inspected.

Lid lock assemblies, drain pumps and drive components are accessed by opening the cabinet, which should be left to a technician. Book a washer repair visit and mention whether the washer drains before stopping.
