Troubleshooting

Frigidaire Washer Shaking or Walking During Spin

Some vibration during a high-speed spin is expected. A washer that bangs, thumps or moves across the floor usually has a leveling, load or shipping-bolt issue.

High-speed spins put a lot of force through a washer, especially a front-loader. A certain amount of vibration is normal, but a washer that thumps loudly, shakes the room or creeps across the floor needs attention before it damages itself, the floor or nearby hoses.

Stop the Cycle If It Is Moving

If the washer is walking or banging hard, pause or cancel the cycle and wait for the drum to stop fully. A washer that moves can strain its drain hose, water hoses and power cord.

New Installation? Check the Shipping Bolts

Front-load washers ship with transit bolts or brackets that hold the drum steady during delivery. If they were not removed during installation, the washer will vibrate violently from the first spin. Your installation instructions show where they are. If they are still in, stop using the washer and have the installer remove them.

Owner-Level Checks

  • Load balance: single heavy items, such as a rug or a pair of jeans alone, throw the drum off balance. Add a few similar items or redistribute the load.
  • Level: place a level on top of the washer front to back and side to side. Try to rock it diagonally; a washer that rocks is not sitting firmly on all four feet. Leveling feet adjustment is covered in the installation guide.
  • Floor: wooden floors flex more than concrete slabs, which magnifies vibration.
  • Pedestal or stacking kit: make sure the pedestal and any stacking hardware are secure as the instructions describe.

Signs of Worn Parts

Loud banging even with a small, balanced load on a level washer, a grinding or roaring sound during spin, or a drum that feels loose when rocked by hand with the washer unplugged can indicate worn shock absorbers, suspension springs or drum bearings. Book a Frigidaire washer repair visit before the problem spreads to other parts.
