What E21 Means
E21 on Frigidaire front-load washers with a digital display (including Affinity, Gallery and current front-load models) means water is not pumping out fast enough. The drain phase took longer than the control allows.
Common Causes of E21
- Clogged drain pump filter
- Kinked or clogged drain hose
- Object stuck in the pump
- Failed drain pump
- Too many suds
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Unplug the washer first. If the cycle used hot water, wait for it to cool. Lay towels and a shallow pan in front of the lower access panel, then follow your owner's manual to open the drain pump filter door, drain the water slowly through the drain tube if your model has one, and unscrew the filter to remove lint, coins or hair ties. Refit the filter snugly, close the door, plug in and run a Drain & Spin. Also check that the drain hose is not kinked or pushed too far into the standpipe. If E21 returns, book service.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Beyond the filter, the pump is inside the cabinet and wired to the control board.
- Removing the pump means dealing with water trapped in the tub and hoses.
- Damage caused during a repair attempt may not be covered by your warranty — check your warranty terms first.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
